Sustainable Period Solutions: Redefining Menstrual Care

Turning a Personal Need into a Healthier Choice for People and Planet

Menstruation is natural. Yet, for millions of women and girls, conversations around menstrual health are still surrounded by silence, stigma, and misinformation. What should be a matter of health, dignity, and confidence often becomes a hidden struggle—impacting not only personal well-being, but also the environment we all share.

At Vedan Trust, we believe menstrual health is not just a women’s issue—it is a public health issue, an environmental issue, and a social responsibility.

Did You Know?

Every single disposable sanitary pad can take 500–800 years to decompose. With nearly 70% of urban women in India relying on disposable sanitary products, the amount of non-biodegradable menstrual waste entering our landfills, drains, water systems, and waste streams is alarming.

But the challenge is not just the waste—it is the lack of awareness around safe disposal.

Because menstrual hygiene is still considered a taboo topic in many homes, schools, colleges, and workplaces, women are often left to manage disposal in secrecy. This has led to unsafe practices such as:

  • Flushing pads into toilets
  • Hiding used pads in washroom corners or bins without segregation
  • Mixing sanitary waste with wet or dry waste
  • Burning pads in open spaces
  • Improper wrapping and disposal that exposes sanitation workers to health risks

What remains hidden inside washrooms eventually becomes a visible environmental and public health problem.

Green the Red Dot

A small red dot symbolizes a monthly cycle. But when paired with awareness, it can become a symbol of change.

“Green the Red Dot” is Vedan’s initiative to transform the way society understands, manages, and talks about menstruation—making it healthier, safer, and more sustainable.

Through this initiative, we work with:

  • Schools and colleges
  • Corporate offices and institutions
  • Communities and apartment associations
  • Women’s groups and youth networks
  • NGOs and healthcare partners

to create informed, confident, and environmentally responsible menstrual practices.

What We Do

At Vedan, we conduct engaging and science-based menstrual health programs through:

Awareness Sessions
Breaking myths, addressing taboos, and creating safe spaces for open conversations.

Interactive Workshops
Hands-on demonstrations on menstrual products, hygiene practices, and safe disposal methods.

Webinars & Training Programs
Reaching larger audiences with expert-led sessions on menstrual health, sustainability, and wellness.

Institutional Programs
Helping schools, colleges, workplaces, and communities adopt safe menstrual waste management systems.

Promoting Sustainable Alternatives

True menstrual freedom comes with informed choices.

We promote sustainable menstrual solutions that are:

  • Safer for the body
  • Free from unnecessary plastics
  • Free from harmful toxins
  • Cost-effective in the long run
  • Gentle on the environment

These include:

  • Reusable cloth pads
  • Menstrual cups
  • Other health-conscious menstrual products

By shifting even one individual toward sustainable alternatives, we reduce years of waste and create lifelong health benefits.

Protecting More Than Just Women

Sustainable menstrual practices create impact far beyond personal health.

They protect:

  • Women and girls, by promoting informed and healthier choices
  • Sanitation workers, by reducing unsafe exposure to menstrual waste
  • Communities, by improving hygiene and waste management
  • The environment, by reducing plastic waste and landfill burden
  • Future generations, by normalizing healthy conversations around menstruation

Our Vision

We envision a world where menstruation is never hidden in shame, managed in secrecy, or disposed of without responsibility.

A world where every red dot leaves a green impact.
