“We found that most educational institutions who come under bulk generator are finding it difficult to manage waste due to lack of knowledge and awareness and end up burning or mixing up the waste. The institutions too requested for facilitation of the proper waste management in place for the institutions. Hence, we decided to launch zero waste campus initiative for the schools and colleges of Yelahanka zone. Zero Waste Campus does not mean no waste generated or plastic free campus, it means that all single use items as per the SWM rules 2016 is reduced to zero and wet-reject-dry waste dropped in right bin and send to their respective designations by this we hope that the message will be carried forward by the students to the adult population which helps in achieving the right behavioural change. As there is a saying “seeing is believing” when children see and are made to practice, then the imbibed habit will stay for rest of their life and passed on to their children too. By this initiative we intend to give the right direction to the institutions, those who achieve it will be official recognised by the BBMP and awarded the zero- waste logo”. – Sri Naeem Momin, KAS, Joint Commissioner, Yelahanka Zone, BBMP

“We have started this initiative in Yelahanka zone so that we can reach out to schools and colleges and facilitate them in their waste management so that we don’t get their waste because according to the SWM 2016 rule they come under the Bulk Waste Generator and BBMP is not supposed to lift their waste. I hope that institution will make the best use of this program and manage their waste efficiently”. – Sri M Krishnamurthy, Superintending Engineer, Yelahanka zone, BBMP

“Yelahanka SWM, BBMP, has chosen educational institutions as the venue for our innovative Zero Waste Campus Workshop due to the ease of reaching and spreading awareness among students. Recognizing the influential role of students, this initiative aims to empower them as advocates for zero waste practices, fostering a ripple effect of sustainability in their households and neighbourhoods.” – Sri. “Team Swachha Belaku, BBMP and volunteers have set up Dry Waste Aggregation Centre and Leaf Composters in the campus. They have explained me well about the dry and wet waste management. FANUC has funded this Zero Waste Campus set up in the school for which I am very much thankful. We were facing challenges in managing our waste having to call BBMP vehicles multiple times for waste pick up. After the implementation of this Zero Waste Campus initiative, managing waste is now easy. Also, the message boards with teachers’ photos are very innovative and motivates the students to keep the school premises clean. The established infrastructure and facility are very useful to us. I am very thankful for the Swachha Belaku team, BBMP and the donor FANUC for this.” – Mrs. S Kannamma, Principal, Government High School, Yelahanka

“Waste management basics should be taught to students. The way I started looking at waste totally changed. One of my teachers went to another level of preparing incense sticks out of flower waste. I am very happy and glad to be the first school to be declared as zero waste campus. I have 2 more branches of mine where soon we will implement the same. I started doing it at my home too. Its not difficult and intentions to be clear. I request everyone to please do it and It is a superb initiative which Vedan Trust and Swachha Belaku people have come up with. We have a very big responsibility of starting in schools. Thank you Vedan Trust, Swachha Belaku, BBMP and my school team.” – Mr. Nihal, Director of Newton and Subhash Group of Schools
