Tree Plantation Program – A Reflection – Insights from Learnings!

Tree Plantation Program – Chitradurga, Karnataka

Tree Plantation activity was conducted in a small village of Chitradurga district. The road distance from village to school is 1km. The team decided to plant native trees along this route which can provide shade to the children and people using this road. 75 trees were planted and the school teachers were asked to allocate a tree to each student so that they can water them daily while commuting to and fro from the school. Only few allocations were done, and children prioritized few species and rest of the trees were left neglected. The team tried to water the plants through tankers with the help of local civic bodies which failed due to loopholes existing in the system. The program failed with plant survival rate of only 5%.

Tree Plantation Program – Challakere, Chitrdurga, Karnataka

Team decided to collaborate with Panchayat of Challakere to plant trees around the beds of lake. Planning and implementation process were put on paper. But due to lack of assurance from the Panchayat on aftercare of the trees, program was halted.

Tree Plantation Program – Bagalkot, Karnataka

Plantation activity was planned in Bagalkot district, wherein small farmers were approached to plant native fruit plants distributed for free. The program was dropped due to the fact that the farmers showed no interest in planting the trees and demanded to provide commercial tree saplings such as silver oak, mahogany etc and showed no interest in aftercare of the fruit tree plantation which was planned.

Tree Plantation Program – Kattigenahalli School, Bengaluru – Yes, This Time, We Did It Right!

100 trees were planted in Government Higher Primary School, Kattigenahalli. Teachers of the school also contributed to the purchase of the saplings. Drip irrigation was laid to all the saplings for hassle-free watering of the plants. A person in-charge nurtured the plants well. The program was a huge success with a survival rate of 99%.
