Amruthahalli Waste Management

Amruthahalli is located in Bengaluru North taluk, Ward no. 7 of Byatarayanapura. Janatha Colony is within the area where a considerable portion of them are hardworking labour community belonging to lower middle class. A sizable population here are shopkeepers, housekeeping staff and cooks. There are about 150 houses in the colony. The area is well known for its poor roads and unhygienic environmental conditions. Stagnant drainage water and garbage are breeding grounds for mosquitoes here. The detrimental effect of poor road conditions, mosquito’s & garbage menace was becoming a vital concern for the mass living.  From previous 2 years there was no residential garbage collection and trash removal due to contractors not collecting the garbage because of its poor quality. People followed their own methods of waste disposal like throwing, burning etc.

This is where we conceived the thought of “TRIKONE MODEL and “CARROT & STICK Policy” to tackle the issue.

TRIKONE MODEL

The beauty of this model is that it doesn’t require any contractors, huge garbage disposal vehicles or compactors. It drastically reduces the cost of waste management and load on the landfills. It works on simple mantra, “waste should be disposed of, right where it is produced”

Pre-requisites

CARROT & STICK POLICY

The carrot and stick is a combination of rewards and punishments to induce behaviour.

Carrot – Recognize, appreciate and certify both junior and senior team members for their social responsibilities.

Stick – Penalize people dumping garbage, creating blackspots and enforce fines for illegal dumping (similar to penalizing people for smoking in public).

IMPACT

  • Achieved 25% to 60% increase in waste segregation
  • 600+ sensitized on waste segregation and management
